Living gently with linen

Stillday Journal

Natural linen folded loosely beside warm stoneware

Linen brings a softer edge to an ordinary table. Its weave catches the light, its folds remember the last meal, and it becomes familiar through use rather than perfect arrangement.

Give the cloth a daily job

Set a linen cloth beneath your morning cup, lay it across a small tray or keep it close when you make tea. One useful cloth can move between these moments. It need not be saved for a special table.

Our Linen Tea Cloth measures 18 by 26 inches. Fold it once for a compact setting or open it out to give a tea pot and cup a little more room. Keep it away from open flames and hot pans; it is a table cloth, not a heat-resistant mat.

Wash gently and give it air

Follow the care label: machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and air dry. Use a mild detergent, wash with similar colors and avoid a crowded machine so the cloth has room to move.

Shake it out while damp, smooth the edges with your hands and hang it where air can circulate. Let it dry fully before folding or putting it back in a drawer.

Allow a little crease

A relaxed fold suits a quiet table. You can smooth linen when you want a neater setting, but daily creases are part of the surface rather than something to correct after every wash. Pair the open weave with the soft edge of a stoneware cup or the grain of a wooden table.

Keep the routine small

After tea, brush away crumbs and check for spills. Wash when needed instead of putting a damp or stained cloth away. Having a clear place to hang it makes this little task easier, and lets the cloth return to the table ready for the next pause.
